IAP2 Core Values Ongoing Renewal

An Invitation to Participate

Dear fellow IAP2 members,

Do you know and apply the IAP2 Core Values in your practice? Have you ever wondered about how they came to be and whether they’re still relevant in the 21st century? The Core Values fundamentally define our P2 practice, and we want to know what you think!

This is an invitation to participate as an individual or through a chapter in our collective and ongoing dialogue about the Core Values. The Core Values review began three years ago. There was a lengthy and animated discussion at the Portland Conference AGM last October about the changes proposed by the review team.

In response to member request for even greater participation, the IAP2 Board established a Working Committee to specifically examine the wording of Core Value 1 and the proposed Core Value 8.

The proposed changes to Core Values 2-7 were adopted at the 2005 AGM.

We invite all chapters to take an active role in hosting events or meetings focused on the Core Values. This could be done as part of chapter AGMs, local conferences, lunch and learns, P2 networking events, newsletters, web sites, to suggest only a few ideas.

We need your input initially by the end of June 2006 so you need to get busy soon!

Get creative and help the Working Group to thoroughly explore the issue with as many members as possible in advance of the Montreal Conference.

The Working Group has prepared a discussion guide for your use. It provides the background, text and questions related to the two values, directions for submitting feedback, and an overview and timeline of the participatory process that the Working Group will be following between now and the Montreal Conference. Working Group members would be happy to connect with you in support of your local efforts. Our contact information is in the guide.

If you aren’t a chapter member, or your chapter meets far from your home, you may download the guide and submit your feedback through the IAP2 website www.iap2.org.

The Working Group has used Core Value 5 as our touchstone in this project: Public participation seeks input from participants in designing how they participate. When you look at the participation process and the questions in the guide, you will find that we are seeking your input about Core Value content as well as input into how IAP2 makes decisions of this sort. We have also tied our participation process to the P2 Spectrum, so you can be very clear about what is being requested at each step.

The Core Values and their application are important to us all.
Please participate!
