PIA 2020 | Professional Development Course Guide
The International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) “Public Participation for Decision Makers” course helps participants understand what is required to get the best value from an engagement process. The session offers a perspective on how public
participation can be integrated into the overall project plan. It examines the ‘why’, the costs and benefits of public participation, explores involvement of the public in decisions, and emphasises the importance of both the decision being made and
the promise to the public about their involvement in that process.
It also explores the various aspects of good engagement planning (stakeholder and issue identification, understanding core values and policy/project processes) in the context of a decision-making process – working through the opportunities for influence
at different stages. The session also provides an overview of the public participation practitioner's role. The use of case studies are drawn from the Trainers’ experience and those relevant to participants to provide maximum learning and relevance.
