Foundations Course Brochure 

Foundations in Public Participation was designed with the input of successful practitioners who work with diverse populations and divergent circumstances throughout the world. The course is divided into two modules, each focusing on one of the two major phases of public participation, planning and techniques. Upon completion of both modules, you will receive a certificate of completion from IAP2.

Regardless of the arena in which you work, IAP2’s Foundations in Public Participation can broaden your toolkit and bring greater creativity to your approach. This programme will give you a broad-based understanding of how public participation works across the world.

Who will benefit?
Planners, scientists, policy makers and engagement practitioners needing to engage their community. Those seeking to appreciate the role of government and government approval processes related to engaging and working with the community.


The IAP2 Foundations in Public Participation program is divided into modules to focus on planning and delivery:

Module 1: Three days of Planning for Effective Public Participation - 23-25 September 2020
Module 2: Two days of Techniques for Effective Public Participation - 19-20 October 2020

Course outcomes

This module breaks down specific implementation methods including:

  • Interviews
  • Revolving Conversations
  • Deliberative forums
  • Advisory Groups
  • Workshops
  • Card Storming
  • Citizen jury

You will also focus on how to establish and maintain effective communication throughout the process.

About the Presenter

Margaret Harvie Margaret Harvie has been an accredited trainer since 2008 and a community engagement practitioner for 20 years. She plans and implements community engagement for publicly controversial state government infrastructure projects and regularly works with local government as they face the challenge of conversing with their communities.
