The highly regarded and innovative flagship certificate program IAP2 Certificate in Public Participation has been streamlined and refined in response to the training needs expressed by participants in evaluations across many continents. The new Foundations in Public Participation has been designed with the input of leading practitioners from around the world, many of whom work with diverse populations in a variety of situations.

IAP2 continues to advance the practice of community engagement around the world by providing practitioners with an overview of good practices in the field, and dynamic techniques to enhance impact. This unique training program equips participants with practical tools for designing and implementing effective community engagement.

Who will benefit?
All practitioners needing to engage their community, particularly those seeking to appreciate the role of government in engaging and working with the community.

Program

The new IAP2 Foundations in Public Participation program is divided into modules which focus on the two phases of public participation, planning and techniques implementation:

Module 1: Three days of Planning for Effective Public Participation
Module 2: Two days for techniques for Effective Public Participation

Course outcomes

Participants of the program will learn:

  • How to plan for effective public participation by developing a clear understanding of stakeholder views
  • How to enable stakeholders to participate in decision-making
  • How to select and use the appropriate level of public participation for specific projects based on the IAP2 Spectrum of Public Participation.

About the Presenters

Leading Trainer: Margaret Harvie is accredited by the International Association for Public Participation to deliver the Foundations in Public Engagement Course. She has been delivering these courses for the past seven years. Margaret has been a community engagement practitioner for 20 years. She plans and implements community engagement for publically controversial infrastructure projects and regularly works with local government as they face the challenge of conversing with their communities.

Centre Director: Associate Professor Roberta Ryan is leading public participation practitioner and researcher with over 30 years’ experience. Roberta combines her expertise in this field with her social research, policy evaluation and social planning skills.

Centre Deputy Director: Melissa Gibbs is a recognised leader in the fields of regional collaboration and strategic planning, combining over two decades of experience in practice, consulting and in an academic setting .
