Conference to strengthen university-community partnerships and promote sustainability
For the first time, an alliance of Australian universities has invited
business, industry, Government, schools and TAFE to a united conference to
promote partnerships that will lead to improved sustainability.
To be held in Queensland in July, the Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance (AUCEA)
conference will see representatives from 35 universities and dozens of other organisations
come together.
Hosted by the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC), in collaboration
with the 34 other AUCEA members, the conference will be held under the banner
of “Engaging for a sustainable future”.
This year’s conference will feature special “Partnering with
Universities” sessions and workshops which will reinforce the benefits of
teaming up with a university, as well as provide “how to” information to
non-university delegates.
The focus of the conference will be to improve and expand partnerships
for any socially, culturally, economically or environmentally sustainable
outcome.
AUCEA is an Australian university alliance committed to forging
sustainable partnerships for the benefit of the communities in which they
operate. Professor Scott Bowman, President of AUCEA, recently invited all
interested businesses and organisations to attend. “AUCEA extends a special invitation to private sector businesses,
Government agencies, Councils and non-university education institutions that
have either discovered the benefits of partnering with a university or would
like to create a mutually beneficial relationship,” Professor Bowman said. “The conference will highlight case studies of research partnerships,
joint university-community initiatives, and projects that have improved the
sustainability of our society,” he said.
The conference is attracting globally-renowned university–community
engagement experts, such as Professor John Goddard OBE. Professor Goddard,
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Regional Development
Studies at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom, will head the
conference program. As an international Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development (OECD) community engagement consultant, Professor Goddard
assists governments in promoting university-community
engagement to the economic and social benefit of their country.
The AUCEA National Conference 2008 will commence on the USC campus on
Wednesday 9 July, before being translocated to World Heritage-listed Fraser Island where delegates will experience environmental sustainability first hand at
Kingfisher Bay Resort.
Registrations are now open at www.auceaconference.net.au.

Call for Chapters and Reviewers - Working with Difficult Groups
You are invited to submit a proposal for a chapter in the forthcoming book:
The Handbook for Working with Difficult Groups:
How They Are Difficult, Why They Are Difficult, What You Can Do.
This will be the third in the series of handbooks published by Jossey-Bass/ Wiley and the International Association of Facilitators, Sandor P. Schuman, Editor. Chapter proposals are due March 15, 2008.
Groups enable us to accomplish goals unattainable by individuals working alone.
Groups can be extremely effective, and also they can be difficult to work with.
By examining groups and their difficulties we can better understand (1) how they are difficult (the observable phenomena that present the difficulty) and
(2) why they are difficult (the underlying causes of the difficulty). Building on that understanding, we can suggest (3) what we can do as group facilitators, leaders, and members to help the group work more effectively.
For the complete Call for Chapters and Reviewers, Chapter Proposal Form, Chapter 1, and related information, visit www.difficultgroups.com.
