Chapter News

December 2009 -- December brings change; join the "Chapter Conversation on Dec. 1 to learn more and participate. After two decades of pioneering global leadership in the public involvement and consensus building communities, IAP2 is taking a hard look at what the next two decades and beyond will bring. There has never been a more exciting and promising time for this field, and we need to make sure we're ready for it. In the next several days, IAP2's international board will be asking you -- the members and future of this organization -- to weigh in on this discussion about how we're organized and how we'll grow, a conversation that began at the San Diego international conference.

We're holding a "Chapter Conversation" on Dec. 1 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in both Phoenix and Tucson to further discuss the future of IAP2 and what we, as a chapter, want to see. The cost to attend is only what you choose to purchase for breakfast.

October 2009 -- Elections: Call for Nominations

It's that time of year again! Do you want to take on a bigger role in IAP2, or do you know someone who might?

We are looking for nominations for:

• Treasurer
• Secretary
• Chapter Liaison

July 2009 -- On July 17, 2009, eight of our members met in the cool pines of Flagstaff to create our Chapter Strategic Plan. After enjoying the down-home food at Brandy's Restaurant, we traveled to the North Country Health Clinic conference room for our planning session. For three hours, we brainstormed using the goals and ideas submitted to us from our members and interested parties via the pre-meeting survey questions. Afterward, we traveled downtown for happy hour at the turn-of-the-century Hotel Weatherford. All in all, we had both great networking/social time and fantastic planning time! We are pleased to share with you the results of the planning session.

Based on our primary goal of increased involvement of our current members and interested parties, we chose to organize the chapter into three regional areas -- Northern, Central and Southern -- that would maintain a statewide cohesiveness through monthly e-mails, discussion topics on our Facebook page and an updated Chapter Web site. Training and/or social programs will be organized on a regional level and will occur throughout the state on an almost monthly basis. We are also excited to announce an annual statewide signature event that will occur in the spring. We want to promote IAP2 through presentations at other professional organizations' conferences, and in general, we hope to bring more value to you -- our members and interested parties -- on a regular basis.

We need help! To implement this plan, we need help! Are you interested in writing an article for our monthly e-mail? Participating in planning a training and/or social program in your regional area? Helping to coordinate the annual signature event? Please contact the appropriate committee leader(s) to let us know. We'll be calling our members and interested parties to recruit volunteers.

Speaking, Not Shouting: A Community Conversation About Health Care Reform

-- Southern Region: Outrage, Emotion and Public Participation. Building on IAP2’s internationally recognized best practices in public participation, and the work of Dr. Peter Sandman, a global expert in risk communication, this newly minted course looks at public and stakeholder emotion and outrage and how to identify and address these factors in public participation programs. This highly participatory, hands-on course is a fresh two-day mix of lecture, video, interactive discussion and ample exercise that will give you the tools and confidence to manage the toughest public issues that we face.
People who take this course:

• Will leave with a fundamental and common understanding of public anger and outrage.
• Will know how to identify, predict and assess the causes of outrage
• Will understand the meaning and importance of the formula: Risk = Hazard + outrage
• Will take with them an understanding of the 12 components of outrage
• Will comprehend and appreciate the 4 distinct kinds of risk communication

This course also covers:

• Six main and 50 sub-strategies and approaches for dealing with outrage
• Incorporating outrage management strategies into you public participation plan
• Tools & Techniques: Methods for engaging people in outrage situations
• Stakeholder analysis and motivations
• The orbits of participation and outrage
• Barriers to outrage management
• Value Based & Empathic Questioning
• Roles and responsibilities in managing outrage
• How you impact public and stakeholder anger and attitude
• The course re-establishes a common understanding of authentic public participation and links
• the relationship between public involvement values, ethics, planning, and outrage management

By taking this course, participants will:

• Understand and learn how to identify outrage and its causes in public participation

• Know how outrage hinders public participation programs, and how to plan for its

• Understand the principles, approaches and strategies for dealing with emotion and outrage

• Practice applying the principles, strategies and approaches for identifying and responding to
